Callala Bay was settled by William Hincliffe of Sydney who acquired 200 acres in 1841. The origin of the name ‘Callala’ has two possibilities – either from the Aboriginal word “Kallala” which means fish; or from one of Berry’s convicts, Patrick Smith (born at Calala, Ireland), who lived in this area and named it Callala.
